The Whiteley Reaches Practical Completion Amid Strong Run of Residential Sales and Lettings

The Whiteley today announced that it has reached Practical Completion, marking the culmination of a remarkable reimagining of London’s first department store. Spanning 1.1 million sq. ft. with a gross development value of £1.5 billion, this transformation was successfully delivered by joint venture partners MARK and C C Land, alongside development manager Valouran and an exceptional professional team.

This physical milestone comes at a time of strong commercial momentum for The Whiteley, with the recent opening of Six Senses London, continued residential sales success and a growing roster of commercial tenants, contributing to the significant regeneration of Queensway.

The Grade II listed building, originally designed in 1911 as a globally renowned emporium of the senses, has been carefully restored and re-envisioned. Foster + Partners led the architectural vision of the masterplan, enhancing the building’s historic fabric to create a vibrant mixed-use destination.

Key heritage features – including the original glass dome and clocktower – have been meticulously restored, alongside the careful conservation and relocation of the building’s historic staircase. A remodelled cupola on the northern corner of The Whiteley further completes the new composition, fulfilling an element of William Whiteley’s original design that had never been realised.

The first residents moved in during late 2024, and the development has proven attractive to both domestic and international buyers, generating strong interest from British, American, Asian and European markets.

Achieving average values of £3,600 per sq. ft., noted by Savills as a 200% premium over the surrounding Bayswater area, The Whiteley stands out as a notable success despite wider market uncertainty. Building on this momentum,

The Whiteley’s specially curated The Designer Collection has brought together a series of world-leading interior designers to create bespoke residences tailored to the building’s unique floor plates. Many of these homes have sold immediately upon launch, with recent collaborations including RH Contract, Maxalto and Maoliosa Murray.

As the founding force behind The Queensway Steering Group – a collective of landowners shaping a bold new vision for the street – The Whiteley has driven a £3 billion rejuvenation, the largest investment the area has ever seen.

The initiative includes major public realm improvements, such as widened pavements, extensive regreening, upgraded tube stations, new pavilions for all-day outdoor dining, public art installations, and a brand-new entrance to Hyde Park.

Also central to Queensway’s transformation is The Whiteley’s curated selection of tenants across its 19 commercial units and the UK debut of Six Senses London in March 2026. This 109-key hotel further elevates the destination and underscores The Whiteley as a driving force in Queensway’s regeneration.

Having already welcomed Third Space, Everyman, Nela, 3812 Gallery, Adventures in Furniture and Guillam Coffee House, upcoming 2026 openings at The Whiteley include the Mayfair-based café LALÏ, indoor golf destination 14 Clubs, premium pharmacy Whiteley Health, Japanese mochi bar Yuum, the South Kensington- based salon Oblique Beauty, luxury food store Willy’s and Duck & Dry.

Dickie Wong, Deputy Chairman/Executive Director at C C Land, comments: “Rather than signalling a closing chapter for The Whiteley, practical completion marks an exciting new beginning for the building and the surrounding area. We are incredibly proud of the reimagination of this once overlooked landmark and look forward to seeing how The Whiteley will continue to inspire and serve generations to come.”

Marcus Meijer, CEO at MARK, comments: “Marcus Meijer, CEO at MARK, comments: “Reaching this eagerly anticipated milestone marks the culmination of the hard work and dedication of countless individuals who have contributed to The Whiteley, and we are deeply grateful for their efforts in creating one of London’s most exciting new destinations – somewhere people want to live, visit, and spend time.
